Pismo Beach Trip Report:

I worked a half day on Friday, went home and got all of my stuff together, checked the rover and packed for the weekend. Had to wait for my friend Brendon to get off of work and go by his hanger at El Monte Airport to pick up his cooler. He got there a little after 4:00 where we proceeded to pack his stuff in the rover and head out. Left from my house in San Gabriel around 4:30 and took the 210 to the 118 so we could avoid the traffic on the 101 through the valley. The drive was uneventful other than a little traffic through Camarillo. We finally arrived in Grover Beach around 9:00 where we stopped by the market for some ice and a few snacks. Drove down to the beach and pulled over to air down and happened to ge there the same time as Brad. After airing down and bs'ing a bit I followed Brad down the beach and into the dunes to the campground. Lutz and some of the NCLR people were already there and had setup camp. We got to camp, said our hellos and made some introductions and then set up our tent. At that point i'd sat down and had a couple of beers and the idea of a night run came up. I let my friend drive since i'd had the afformentioned beers and driving buzzed is a bad idea. About 5 of us went out and messed around in the dunes for an hour or so. Came back to camp and ended up sitting around the fire and talking with Brad, Lutz, Colin and Pedram from NCLR till about 3 am.

The next morning we got up, had some coffee and breakfast and headed out for another run in the dunes around 11:00.

About 8 of us went out and drove around for a couple of hours until around 1:30 Matt shows up in his uber clean 97 D90 ST.

At this point Lutz and Colin are taking turns making runs and jumping this decent sized hill and seeing who could catch the most air.

About 2:00 we decide to head back to camp and get everyone else together to go on the Garcia Ridge run that was scheduled for that afternoon. On our way back to camp Matt's D90 got stuck cresting a dune on the way back to camp.

Turns out his shifter was stuck in first gear and couldnt get it back into park so he could re-start it. At that point recovery gear was broken out and Matt's D90 was winched up on to the flat by Lutz with a newer range rover from NCLR acting as an anchor.

Colin climbed under the truck and pulled the cotter pin from the shift cable and manually shifted the truck into park so Matt could get it started. After manually shifting it into drive we were underway back towards camp - for a bit.

Matt got beached in a pocket of soft sand and had to be pulled out wit a tow strap.

After getting back to camp we started to figure out what the problem was. Colin and my friend Brendon went to work on sorting the issue. They were thinking the shift lock solenoid was stopping things from moving but ended up finding the clip that holds the wedge in the shifter that the shift button presses against to pull the cable up and allow it to shift had popped off. After bodging it with some bending of the old clip and some precision zip ties all was right again and Matt's truck was back in working order.

After standing around for a bit we finally managed to get everyone together and headed out to get gas, air up and make the drive to the Garcia Ridge trail a few miles north of Arroyo Grande and Lopez Lake.

Garcia Ridge was a pretty mellow trail, regardless of its black diamond rating. There was one big rock climb at the end where Lutz, Colin and another of the guys from NCLR gave it a go. Lockers were a must, Lutz and Colin made it up with no drama. The other guy from NCLR only had a rear locker and couldnt quite make it up the last bit of the trail despite giving it a go a few times.

At this point we headed back down Garcia Ridge and went up to the lookout for a group photo.

Photos taken everyone was keen to get back down to the beach as it was pretty warm inland and getting late in the day. We headed back down around 7:00 past Lopez Lake, through Arroyo Grande and back into Grover Beach. At this point my friend I and split from the group to stop and grab a bite to eat and get more ice. We headed back down to the beach and the dunes once we were done. We got back to camp right about dusk and proceeded to chat with everyone in the group around the campfire and have a few beers.

A few in the group decided to go out for another night run but as I was a bit worn from driving all day I decided to sit back and relax around the campfire. Ended up heading to bed around midnight after a long day of wheeling.

Woke up Sunday moring and ate breakfast, broke down camp and loaded up the truck. At this point some had to take off and head home and others were still breaking down camp. The rest of us decided to go back out and make one last run in the dunes. We putzed around, rode some bowls, jumped some hills and generally had a good time.

Around noon we decided to hit one more spot in the dunes then head out. Well, as we were making our way over to the last spot of the day we came across a guy in a pre-runner style chevy that had managed to get stuck on the face of a dune and blow out one of his sand paddles which subsequently got wrapped around his axle. Tow straps were broken out and Colin pulled him down off the face of the dune back to the relatively flat bit where we could proceed to dig out the wheel, jack up the truck and swap on his spare.

After he was sorted we packed up and headed back to camp where we said our goodbyes and headed home. Four and a half hours later we were back home after sitting in the usual sunday santa barbara / ventura /oxnard traffic.

Thanks again to Lutz for setting up the trip. Was great to see some old faces. Got to meet a lot of great people from NCLR, as well as Matt - one of our new members from SCLR. Had a great time and as the weekend progressed I got more comfortable on the dunes. Even though the drop down the face of Comp Hill was still a bit out of my comfort zone by the end of the weekend I was shooting the bowls while a bunch of Jeeps just sat around and watched. Cant wait till next time :)

Nice little teaser video. BTW, Colin was the guy from NCLR in the classic. My friend Brendon who was riding with me shot all the photos, i was too busy driving :). I've got to go through all my gopro footage and edit that down to something viewable.

I really enjoyed this trip and would like to thank all those that attended. I wasn't able to get a lot of pics but here are the ones my girlfriend was able to take.

And of course, the Rover Dogs.
