The fee for the FCC license (good for 10 years) to use GMRS radios will drop to $35 starting on April 19. Unlike amateur “ham” radio, there is no test involved. GMRS radios are handy for SCLR convoy use as they share the same Channels 1-22 as the FRS “walk-in-talkies”, but offer greater range and clarity as higher transmitter power and external (roof-top) antennas may be used.

Cal4Wheel has made a decision to embrace GMRS for their trail runs and they are also encouraging all their members to obtain their GMRS license to use on their trail runs. Midland offers discounts frequently on both their mobile GMRS and handheld GMRS radios. An entire family can share the license and the major caveat is the the call sign should (must) be used every 15 minutes or at end of communication. GMRS doesn’t necessarily take the place of HAM, but for most off-road trips, it’s more than adequate and has much better range and clarity over CB.

I was wrong about the effective date of the price of the cost reduction for the GMRS License. Lower fees are still promised, but probably not until this summer (currently $70).

The “Jeep Jamboree” has also adopted GMRS for their trail communications (and, by coincidence, Midland, maker of the popular Micro-Mobile” line of GMRS Mobile Radios, is “official 2021 communications sponsor of Jeep Jamboree USA.”).
