Hey Frank, Renee and I are gonna race up to meet y'all from the OC. Whats the best way up in the afternoon and about what time should we roll in time to rendezvous point. This will also be my 1st evening excursion from that direction as the last time was with Eric but from Sand Canyon area.

Oh well, I'll just tell the wife to take an extra sleeping pill tonight, just in case. See you guys in a bit, I should be on time but wait for us if we are a little late.

PS: I forgot my FRS radios at home this morning, retard. If one of you has an extra one, can I borrow it tonight?

I usually have an extra radio or two. See you there! Last time it took about an hour to get back to the highway from where we'll be at, but I'm thinking if the meteors are really flying, we won't want to leave on time!!

Whoa, that was FUN! Thanks Frank, David and I had a great time and it was good to see everyone last night. I managed to get... zero meteors on camera, but hey. It was such a uniquely original run, I hope we make it an annual event - if the stars cooperate, of course!

Alright, back to work. :(

Thanks to everyone who came along on the Rowher Flat/Perseid Meteor Shower Night Run!

While the drive up the hill to the summit is fairly steep, it was uneventful, in that everyone made it without any problems.

Once at the top, we had a quick snack before it got too dark to see what we were eating and then relaxed and enjoyed the show. The weather was a little cool, and with almost no wind.

I, for one, was a little disappointed in the number of shooting stars- everything I read had predicted up to 60 meteors per hour. We were far from that number, though of the meteors we did get to see, a number of them were spectacular. It got a little hazy as the night progressed and combining that with the light pollution, any meteors nearer the horizon were missed. The best time to view was around 3 am which a little to late for me.

The trip back down the south side of the hill was fun, and with only a few minor undercarriage rubbings, I'm told.

I'd be happy to make this an annual event, and perhaps with much more prep time, I'll be able to line up an astronomer. It may make sense to choose another venue- possibly Mt. Pinos. If the Perseid Meteor shower is on a weekend next year, it might make sense to make it an overnight trip. We'll see.

See you all on the next one.

(I'm planning yet another Death Valley Geology Tour for November 19-21, 2010. I met with Allan, my geologist friend, this morning and that time-frame currently works with his schedule. Stay tuned for more details.

If you'd like to participate, I'd love to know what areas you'd like to see, either again or for the first time. I definitely have my favorites, and there are some "must-see" places. Shoot me an email: frankbuddenbrock (at) earthlink.net)

Working on keeping it shiny side up!
