Hello SCLR,
I've just joined about a week ago after pondering joining for several months. The site looks great and I really like reading about the different trips. So, I thought I would join and hope to do a trip or two in the future. I had a ZJ for several years and did a little off-road driving near my home in Yucca Valley. Mostly around Joshua Tree NP. The transmission went (again) and the diff went (again) and after 245K mi I parted with it. I have a 2WD Nissan Frontier that I tried a few trails on, and after getting stuck several times in Rattlesnake canyon decided I needed another 4WD. I've always liked the Discoverys and during one camping trip we saw a family with a Defender 110. My wife said that was the truck she wanted so when back home looked up how much they were and quickly re-set my sights on a Discovery. I bought a 2004 D2 from West Coast Rovers after looking at about a dozen. I'm quite happy with it. I put on a 2" OME lift (I went with the heavy duty springs since the family is 5 and if we are all on board I thought it would be best, it works well but it is a little rough if I don't air down) and bought a set of 16" Mirage wheels from Abran and then added 265/75 BFG AT KO2's. The set up has worked well so far, just a little rub on the front radius arms when fully turned. I have some coolant leaks from the rear of the heads so new head gaskets will be coming soon. I'll be asking questions about that task in a month or so.

I've done trails up to Big Bear (Burns Canyon/2N02, Rattlesnake canyon and Cleghorn trail near Silverwood Lake). Saw a RRC and a Camel Trophy Disco a few weeks ago on the Burns Canyon trail, don't know if they were SCLR members but it was neat to see!

I like to do all the work on my cars and did the suspension work and just changed the plugs and wires. Will tackle the head gaskets as soon as I replace the rear main seal on my wife's Honda. I really like how the RAVE manual is available and downloaded that to my tablet and think I've read the whole thing.

Sorry to be so long winded, I'd like to hear from other members and look forward to meeting you on the road!

Cheers, borg81 (Joe)
