Sherman Pass - Monarch - Kennedy Meadows
Day 1: Meet a the Chevron Station on Wofford Heights (Lake Isabella area) fuelled and ready to go at 10:00 AM. We will have a driver’s briefing and depart promptly at 10:30 AM. Today’s route will be on Mountain Highway 99 paralleling the Kern River, Sherman Pass Road, Sherman 4x4 Trail and ending at Monarch Meadow where we will be spending the night. Reservations are not required. This campsite has a pit toilet but no water. Today’s sights/stops include Sherman Peak (9843 feet), Bonita Meadows, and the Black Rock Visitor Center. Total distance for the day is 71 miles.
Day 2: Break camp at 10:00 AM. Today’s route will take us back to Sherman Pass Road to Kennedy Meadows Road and ending at the Kennedy Meadows campground where we will be spending the night. Reservations are not required. The campground has pit toilets but no water. Today’s sights/stops will be based what the route has to offer. Total distance for the day is 33 miles.
Day 3: Break camp at 9:00 AM and leave the area via Kennedy Meadows Road toward I-395, which is 30 miles from Kennedy Meadows.
This trip totals 149 miles from the Chevron station in Wofford Heights to the Shell station in Pearsonville.
Sherman Pass 4x4 is rated moderate, is 16 miles long and 3 – 5 hours in duration.
Monarch Meadows is rated easy, is 18 miles from Sherman Pass Road and 1.5 – 2 hours in duration.
The campsites are at higher elevations, so be prepared for cold nights.
